This is a word that almost always refers to a religious, usually Christian, club or social event. Therefore, the word has really become a part of the Christianese language.
Here's a story from my own experience. When I was 19, I went for my first time to a church that called itself a "Christian Fellowship". I was not familiar with the word "fellowship", and I remember saying to myself, "What is a fellowship? It must be some sort of relationship between fellows? That sounds gay."
I don't believe that fellowship is a word that the younger generations of the un-churched will understand, or will find easy to accept into their vocabularies; especially when there are many other easily understood words that convey its meaning in a more relevant way. These are a few alternatives:
